1. Episode summary
Oracle was founded in June 1977 in Santa Clara, California by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates under the name Software Development Laboratories, with $2,000 of initial capital and a first contract from the Central Intelligence Agency codenamed "Oracle." The founders bet the firm on a then-unproven academic idea — Edgar Codd's 1970 relational model for database management — and in 1979 shipped Oracle Version 2, the first commercial relational database management system (RDBMS) to use SQL. 3. OTA narrative
Observe. Oracle's observation work was the decisive early move of the episode and the foundation for everything that followed. In 1977 Ellison and Miner read Codd's 1970 paper on the relational model — at the time an IBM research artefact that IBM itself was slow to commercialise — and correctly read two signals the rest of the enterprise-software peer group missed at the same date: that SQL-based relational systems would become the industry standard, and that portability across heterogeneous hardware would be the axis of competitive advantage in a multi-vendor corporate computing world.
